How about some FShali? I woke up feeling soft about Tali, so that's where we're at. I chose walking home.

Here's one of the songs I listened to while writing.

"You know, it would be much easier to take the taxi," Tali mused as she watched jane pull a set of walking poles from her luggage. "It is a little unusual to send you things alone in an automated skycar."

Jane rolled her shoulders and her neck, bracing one hand against the car as the door hissed close. "I've been couped up in a passenger ship, if I don't stretch my legs, they'll get stuck this stiff. Besides, I want to see it."

She wanted to see Rannoch without the gunfire, explosions and hostile Geth.

"If you're sure," Tali said hesitantly as she watched as Jane regained her balance.

Jane offered reassuring smile. Her face had softened since the end of the war, her jaw finally left to ease instead of the constant tension from clenching and grinding her teeth. Her eyes were still tired, but they had a relaxed quality, slowly shifting to take in the scenery instead of darting back and forth looking for threats. "I'm sure, Tali. It'll be good for me."

Tali, seemingly unable to contain herself any longer, swept her arms over Jane's shoulders, clutching the woman to her chest. "I missed you, Jane. So much," she said, a thin waver in her voice.

"I missed you too, but I'm here now. For good."

Recovering from her injuries in the aftermath of everything had been a long and difficult road, requiring her to stay on Earth for too long. Difficult enough that at times she found herself feeling wistful for whatever it was that Miranda and Cerberus had done to fix her up from dead. Being completely unaware for surgeries, grafts and new skin growth had its advantages. Post-surgical physical therapy was a dog.

And then there were the balance issues that plagued her still. Perhaps even for the rest of her life.

After a minute or two of a silent embrace, the two parted. Jane wiped the wet forming in her eyes with a small laugh. She hadn't even realized she was crying. "Lead the way, Admiral. Show me home."

"Shepard, please don't call me that."

"You stop calling me 'Shepard' and I'll stop calling you 'Admiral'," she joked.

"Deal."

The two set off from the temporary space port, a modular construction much like the kind of buildings set up at the beginning stages of colonial development. Fitting for the fresh start the quarian people were taking to resettle their homeworld.

It was early evening, the light from Tikkun painted th esky shades of purple to a pleasing amber. Beyond the low prefabs and active construction sites with towering cranes, tall rock formations and mesas dotted the distant landscape. "I always wanted to visit the desert. It's beautiful."

"Wait until you see the the sunrise over the river. It's like a painting, pictures don't capture how magical it is," Tali enthused, voice full of wonder.

They walked at a liesurely pace, taking in the sights and conveniently allowing for Shepard's slow, unsure gait. She was content to listen to Tali describe all of the steps her people were taking to reclaim their lost homeworld. It was going to be a long, slow-going process, but Tali's own two feet were on the surface, and that's what mattered most.

As they approached a row of attached, prefabricated colony houses, Jane stopped. Growing low to the ground in the wide, unoccupied space left to allow the natural flora and fauna to thrive, was a low, spidering plant. It was covered in bright blossoms that had thick rounded petals in vibrant yellows and oranges. The narrow leaves decorating the twisted stems were blue-gray and were covered in a fine, velveteen fuzz.

"Help me get closer, Tali. It's so pretty, I want to see it better."

"Of course!"

Tali helped Jane squat down by holding one of her poles steady as the other woman gripped it until she was just about on her hand and knees, eyeing the plant like a small child might. In short order, both women were on the ground, attempting to identify the various parts of the plant.

"I would say that I wish I had paid closer attention in primary school when we went over plants, but I don't think we covered xeno-botany," Jane mused with excitement lighting up her eyes.

Tali chuckled as she prodded at the dark amber center of one of the flowers. "Don't look at me, my expertise is about as far away from plant science as you can get. I do know that there is a tiny, little rodent that likes to eat them. They are adorable!"

"As cute as my hamster?"

"Even cuter! They have big, tall ears and very fluffy tails."

Jane hummed thoughtfully before responding, "I'll believe it when I see one. Can I take a flower?"

She really wanted to preserve one, having grown fond of making mementos of the small, beautiful signs of life arround her since her recovery. A way to remind her that the galaxy was going to recover too. But she would not take if it wasn't allowed.

Maybe.

Tali answered by plucking one of the larger blossoms and tucking it behind Jane's ear. "I think, even if it was not allowed, you could have one. They look so lovely in your hair."

Jane's cheeks grew warm. "Charmer," she muttered, feeling suddenly embarrased.

"I mean it, Jane."

Jane reached out, laying her hand on Tali's shoulder. "I know, babe. I'm just bad at taking a compliment. Thank you, I mean it."

Tali wrapped her hand over Jane's, squeezing it affectionately. "What do you say we get home? I want to take off this mask."

Jane shifted, planting her pole firmly in the ground. "That sounds like a great idea. It's been too long since I've been anywhere called home."

Tali hopped up and offered her hands to assist. "Well, now you're home."

"For good," Jane confirmed.

"For good."

Update:

Talked to a bloke. Considering where the leak is, they're gonna hafta yank my tranny out. Probably gonna be about 2k in costs just for labour plus costs to fix whatever's fucked. He's certain there's shit fucked. I'm also certain there's shit fucked. Fuck.

Gonna put in tranny fluid every 30mi/30min. Right now she's holding what fluid we got in there.

Put in a new LEGIT radiator overflow. Required some bush mechanicry including using spit as lube and the tip of my shop scissors as a wedge to get the hose on. This is also how I ended up cutting myself on the hose clip (by using scissors as pliers cuz I. Can't find my pliers...)

Dad is angry because he doesn't know how to start my truck properly. She starts right up for me. Also 10 minutes ago I was skiting about this and she decided to get difficult with me. Took me a couple tries. But she started faster than she does with him. Content to teach me a little lesson, I guess. Lesson learnt, I'll be humble.

There's a big piece of hard plastic shit in the road (think esky lid but a bit smaller) where my brakes went weird. I reckon my tyre skidded on it and that's the crinkling I heard and what caused the skidding feeling. Fingers crossed that's all.

I had a spare 14a fuse and replaced it. Indicators are working. I bought some fuses from AutoZone and replaced the 20a fuse. My taillights are working now. They fucked my pigtail up—the brake and headlight lights are crossed—but the important thing is that my wires ARE working. We have indicators on Tilly again!! And brake lights!!

chapter one: so

the second hot sun rays hit the tip of his nose, mysta cursed his mum. he might love her but making him spend the summer in malibu, at his alcoholic aunt’s place to, how she called it, socialize, was one of the worst things she had managed him to do.

he had spend the first two days in bed, trying to fix the jet lag. he was grateful for the ac system his aunt had invested in just last summer, cold air keeping his explosive nerves at bay.

now, it was already wednesday and he still didn’t know what his aunt was doing for a living, she had dragged him outside. the afternoon sun knew no mercy, trying to burn everything in the heat of the moment. mysta only tagged along for grocery shopping because he got promised a bubble tea — and again, curse his mum for sharing his guilty pleasure drink with her sister in law.

“come on, honey! we have to hurry or the ice cream will melt!” mysta rolled his sunset eyes, still irritated and left traumatized by the american store experience. he fastened his pace nevertheless, pushing the card on the crusty asphalt towards the silver chevrolet.

his aunt was way too proud of the esky cooler box one of her australian friends gifted her last birthday, but he wasn’t one to complain when they put the already melting ice cream inside.

he wasn’t even sure if he’d ever gather the courage to word out the things bugging his mind towards his bubbly aunt. they weren’t close, really, and mysta wasn’t sure if they’ll ever be. it’s not like he didn’t like the thought of it, although he also wasn’t quite fond of it either; most people or social interactions made him feel uncomfortable, the woman next to him in the driver’s seat with her loud voice and far too affectionate way of speaking drained his social battery like winters’ coldness.

“do you want som’n as well?”, he asked before opening the door again. mysta already prepared himself to get hit by hot, sticky and salty air on this face once more — he really craved a cold shower at this point and he’d just left the house two hours ago. he never thought he’d miss the uk’s weather.

“oh, just whatever you’re getting is fine for me!” the brunette sighed, “are you sure?” his aunt gave him a nod before handing him her wallet. mysta averted his eyes, softly pushing it back towards her.

“mum gave me enough money, nina.”

”noooo! but i wanna pamper you all summer long! i can’t just let my adorable little nephew pay for everything himself, hm?”, nina opened the wallet, took out 20 dollars and unceremoniously shoved them into mysta’s front pocket of his black shorts after snatching his wallet.

“there, there”, a content smile spread across her lips before she ruffled his hair, “now, hurry, i want some boba.” mysta wished for summer to end right there, right then — there was no way he would be able to handle nina for one whole summer without having a complete meltdown in front of her (also caused by her). mysta had never asked to bond with the sister of his bastard dad.

the shop wasn’t too crowded when the brunette entered. there was only one person working behind the counter, obsidian-purple hair in a high ponytail.

as mysta stepped up to the counter, they turned around, a friendly smile on cherry lips: “welcome, gimme a sec, yeah?” the brunette only hummed, voice stuck in his throat since the ravenette had turned around. it’s been a while since he saw someone this angelic, brain too overwhelmed by the sheer amount of shyness that suddenly tried to drown him.

he tried telling himself that it was fine, completely fine — until it wasn’t because let’s be honest, mysta was good at lying, especially to himself. he lied to himself so he could stay in his tiny little bubble of (made up) comfort, bathing in the colors he made up for himself and himself only, since the world outside his own mind seemed so loud and glaring.

“what can i get for you?”, the ravenette smiled at him again and mysta could tell it was part of his job and yet he felt himself drowning in it.

“two mango green teas with mango boba.” mysta watched him tapping around on the display, nodding in an understanding way. the brunette gave him the 20 dollar bill, waiting for his change.

“want a stampcard?”, he then asked, showing him a colorful designed card, white circles on it for the stamps. mysta blinked at it, mind trying to process his words: “uh, sure.” he would be visiting the store more than often anyways, it would be convenient to have one.

“your accent”, the ravenette began as he put ink on the stamp, “you’re not from here, hm?” mysta’s tongue grew heavy again, he knew people would make fun of him for it but an employee in a bubble tea shop out of all things? he pitied himself even more.

“how do you like malibu so far?” mysta took the stamp card from the counter, two black swatches on it, and shoved the change back into the pockets of his shorts.

what did the angel just ask him?

“it’s, uh, very sunny.” mysta slapped himself in his thoughts, not believing what he just said.

the ravenette laughed at his statement and turned around, grabbing two containers: “yeah, it’s pretty hot here.”

mysta wanted to hear that laugh again — it sounded like everything he never had, like something he had been looking for all his life and never found. it soothed his mind; made his face burn up with heat; made him forget why he was there in the first place (in a country far, far away from his home, suffocating under the salty heat and white sweet words of the aunt he never asked for, getting reminded of the dad he never had everyday he looked at her).

“way too hot, man, can’t believe i miss london’s trash weather”, he laughed, breathy and less tense, watching the other prep the drinks. he still felt awkward, small talk never one of mysta’s strong points as he never knew what exactly to say.

“did you move here or are you on vacation?” he didn’t know why the pretty boy was so prone to have a conversation with him but he didn’t complain about it, just being grateful someone this angelic talked to him out of free will. having tons of experience in the nasty niche of customer service, mysta very much knew that chatting with clients wasn’t on the daily plan; it was always just “take their orders, be polite, and provide assistance if needed”, nothing more, nothing less.

“kind of a vacation”, the brunette pondered, not wanting to overshare his situation, “prolly staying till the end of summer.” the pretty boy let out a sound of amazement, nodding softly, making his ponytail sway from left to right with a slow rhythm — mysta couldn’t stop staring at his exposed nape, milky and so inviting.

“so i can expect to see you here more often?” the ravenette turned around, a smile on his lips, something mysta couldn’t read very well but knew this time it was genuine. his teal eyes traveled from his lips down to slender hands, fingertips looked like he dipped them into purple paint.

“i have to fill the stamp card somehow, don’t i”, he smiled back softly.

mysta came back three days later. nina was having some sort of meltdown because of her work (he was still trying to figure out what her job was) and he was not having it, retreating to get himself some comfort — alias, the sweet flavor of mango cooling his throat after a long day of doing nothing inside his little room.

the sun was already setting but he still decided to wear his glasses, as they complemented his orange button up shirt. to be honest, he was unsure if the shop was still open after seven, yet he decided to walk those fifteen minutes. and again, he lied to himself, because why not, he was mysta; mysta, who was too scared to even admit that the ravenette boy with the unique hair had caught his interest; worried that if he dipped his toes into the sea he would get swallowed whole in the blink of an eye.

he was being cautious and slow because diving too deep would suffocate him.

“oh, hi.” he got greeted the second he set foot into the little store, this time he could hear the soft tunes of music in his ears, accompanied by a voice, dripping with honey, so sweet and enchanting.

“hey”, mysta mumbled shily (”oh my god, get yourself together!”), taking the glasses off to let them rest on top of his head. he could feel warmth creeping up his face as he noticed the pretty boy with his obsidian-purple hair loose, draped over his shoulders — mysta thought he looked even prettier like that.

“mango green tea with mango boba?” mysta was surprised he remembered his order and proceeded to nod. they didn’t end up talking a lot this time. mysta found himself enjoying the silence as much as he enjoyed chatting with him, something he rarely had in his life (he just remembered) due to his lack of friendships and lacking understanding of social interactions overall — not that he pitied himself for it.

“there you go… uhm”, mysta watched him angle his head to the side a bit, bangs framing his face like a piece of art. the brunette was so focused on the ravenette’s lips, he completely missed the hint he was getting thrown.

“could i”, the angel blinked, red dust spreading across his cheeks like blooming roses, “get your name?” mysta’s chin almost fell to the floor while his heart stopped beating for a few seconds.

“me?”, he asked, full of surprise and confusion. why would an angel want his name? to write him into a death note so his pathetic life would finally end?

how weird.

“y- yeah… if you don’t mind, of course! sorry if i’m being weird…” mysta watched with wide eyes as the other nervously tucked a lone strand of obsidian hair behind his ear — oh my god is that a piercing —, face red and nibbling on the skin of his lips.

after some staring mysta finally got his nerves together, thoughts no longer sprinting around inside his head (but still running pretty fast): “s- sure! ’m mysta, very nice to meet you.” god, he thought, i’m so fucking bad at this shit.

“i’m shu!”, the ravenette immediately beamed up at him with the biggest and brightest smile mysta has ever seen in his entire life, making his knees weak.

maybe, he said to himself, just maybe, it was okay to dip my toes further into the sea.

Not five minutes could pass without the man's eyes being drawn back to linger once more, up and down the full length of Eskel, and it was getting harder to keep the knowing grin from spreading crooked across his lips.

If the looks hadn't given him away, the scent of lust between them did. But Eskel was patient and waited, watching the smaller man shift on the log they shared, Eskel's own movements calm and collected as he sharpened his steel sword while the other fidgeted, impatient.

"Clothes off," the younger one ordered, and amusement won over and caused a soft grin to pull at the calmer one's lips. But they could both smell his lust as well, and he had no issue following what he was told, letting the other man lead.

When they fell together, Eskel's hand tangled into the messy bun at the top of the other's head, their kiss was more teeth than tongues. The younger man's hands were at his soft body like he was burning to touch him and Eskel let him touch to his heart's content, calm amusement ever on his lips as he road out the storm that was his other self.

The worse the weather, the harder the trek and Jaskier had watched how for a couple of days after arriving, Geralt was always more drawn and quiet, difficult to rouse when he actually slept. It wasn’t something Jaskier gave a lot of thought to because they were usually last to arrive and the gruff manner of the other witchers was no different to usual.

Only, one year, they arrived before Eskel who had got caught up in a contract. The weather wasn’t terrible and while Jaskier was knackered, he was down in the hall when Eskel finally stumbled through. He didn’t even acknowledge Jaskier beyond a grunt and staggered off in the direction of his room which was both rude and unusual. Puzzled and worried, Jaskier followed him a few minutes later, mildly horrified at the idea of Eskel being hurt and trying to tend to his wounds alone. The door to Eskel’s room was shut so Jaskier knocked. There wasn’t a reply and Jaskier quietly nudged it open. There was armour strewn on the floor and a lump in the middle of the bed snored softly. Quietly, Jaskier backed out.

That evening at dinner, he kept glancing towards the door, waiting for Eskel to come in. Eventually even Lambert noticed and grunted a “what?” at him.

“Eskel’s home, I don’t want him sleeping through dinner.”

There was a snort of a laugh from Lambert, followed up by an “ow” when he got kicked under the table. However, Jaskier’s curiosity was piqued. He looked at the gathered witchers expectantly and it was Vesemir who cleared his throat to speak.

“He’ll probably be asleep for a good three days. Lambert will check in on him.”

“Damn right I will,” Lambert cut in. But Jaskier didn’t understand, looked between the others for clarification.

“A witcher’s life,” Vesmir began, “is an exhausting one. We’re constantly on the move, either searching for contracts or completing them. For most of the year, we’re on edge, scarping by because that is our lot in life. Come winter, we return home where, for the first time that year, we can rest safely. The path to Kaer Morhen is so treacherous because it ensures that nobody can exploit a sleeping witcher.”

“In other words, we come home and sleep for up to a week before anything else. It’s why we stagger our arrivals. To look after each other,” Lambert added, surprisingly helpful for a change.

Which only made Jaskier look at Geralt in confusion. “You never sleep.”

There was an uncomfortable silence and Geralt let out a typical hum but Jaskier wasn’t going to let it pass. He poked Geralt in the side, demanding an answer.

“What he means,” Lambert translated smoothly, “is that he’s a stubborn idiot.”

Glaring at Lambert, Geralt shook his head. “I didn’t want to abandon Jaskier.”

“What I said.” Lambert chewed obnoxiously. “But if Esky’s back, I’ll go check on him. Night.” He grabbed a tankard of water and wandered off, looking far too happy.

Which left Vesemir, Geralt and Jaskier, who was looking quite apoplectic. One of the training points for witchers was to know when to back down. Vesemir cleared his throat and nodded. “I shall retire to my room. Good night.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you needed to sleep?” Jaskier’s voice was quiet, hurt.

“Didn’t want to leave you alone. I could manage, it wasn’t important.”

Jaskier argued against that because Geralt’s needs were a priority.

“You were more important,” Geralt said softly. He smiled at Jaskier.

That was that and Geralt thought it was a resolved matter. The next day Jaskier peered into Eskel’s room and smiled when Lambert glared up at him from under the covers, ready to shush him. A couple of days later, Eskel wandered into the hall at lunch, looking a little sleepy but mostly content.

It was the start of Jaskier’s planning. The year rolled on and by the time winter had come round again, he was pestering Geralt to get to the keep early.

“I want us to be first home,” he whinged. Eventually, Geralt relented. The path to Kaer Morhen was still exhausting but it wasn’t as bad as when full winter set in. They made it to the empty keep and Jaskier immediately set about arranging things. First things first, he set a fire in the hall, dragged all the furs, blankets and throws into a pile in front of it and ushered Geralt to settle on it.

“I’ve got things in hand. You rest.” He even passed Geralt a a freshly poured serving of sweetened wine he had been saving for the occasion. As he puttered around, Jaskier kept an eye on Geralt, watched him slump a little, at which point he wrapped a heavy fur around Geralt’s shoulders. It seemed to do the trick as Geralt’s blinks got longer and, as Jaskier wandered past, he lay down on his side.

It took Geralt three days to wake up properly, Jaskier checked on him from time to time and encouraged him to drink some water like he remembered Lambert doing for Eskel, but otherwise the place needed a bit of a tidy. Jaskier spent his days making sure there was enough firewood, that the food Vesemir would bring had a clean place to be stored, he even aired and prepared the rooms for the witchers. And maybe he had a bit of a snoop around them, intrigued to find out about them through their possessions.

By the time Geralt woke up properly, Jaskier was a little bored. They had maybe a day together, Geralt looking much more rested than Jaskier could remember in a long while. When Vesemir walked through the doors, he was surprised to find the two already there and the keep in a state of relative cleanliness. He grunted at them and allowed Jaskier to guide him to the pile of furs in the hall.

Two days later, Vesemir was up, claiming his age meant he needed less sleep. Though, privately, Jaskier suspected that it was habit, the old witcher used to getting by on a minimal sleep just so he could have everything ready for the other.

Eskel arrived before Lambert, by three days. He gratefully sank down by the warmth of the fire barely out of his armour before going to sleep. It was a moment of half-wakefulness when Lambert arrived, looking rather bedraggled. He didn’t even wait to be led to the fire, instead he took initiative, let his armour drop as he walked.

“Hey, Lamb,” Eskel murmured rolling a little and lifting an arm for Lambert to snuggled in.

“Esky,” came the softly breathed reply. They two of them fell asleep. From the doorway, Jaskier watched, leaning against Geralt, proud like a mother-hen.

“We did good,” he concluded. “From now on, I want us to be the first home each winter.”

Leaning in to push his nose into Jaskier’s hair, Geralt sighed. “I suppose we can do that. You’re too good to us.”

It was a promise Jaskier held him to, demanding to return the next winter, equipped with a few more things to make returning home a smoother affair for everyone involved, including himself.
